The Hong Kong SAR lies in southern China on the eastern side of the Pearl River estuary. It returned to Chinese sovereignty on 1 July 1997 and operates under the principles of 'One Country, Two Systems', 'Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong' and a high degree of autonomy. Hong Kong is an international financial, trade and shipping centre.
Under the Constitution of the People's Republic of China and the Basic Law of the Hong Kong SAR, the region enjoys a high degree of autonomy under 'One Country, Two Systems'. Executive authority is exercised by the SAR government, headed by the Chief Executive.
